Freedom Heroes Book Now Available

The Freedom Heroes Project began with the goal to create a book that could be distributed to Rochester area's third-grade students. Today, the resulting book is available online from a local publisher.

Brockport College Drive A Success

The College at Brockport has exceeded its goal, collecting 1,301 new books and 500 gently used books in its 2nd annual Have Heart, Give a Book drive. REF is proud to be a partner in the drive, which donates books to students in need in Monroe and Orleans counties.

East High Book Fair Brings Together Student Loan Corporation,
Rochester Cares, REF

The Student Loan Corporation and Rochester Cares teamed with REF to create a book-fair-style book giveaway for students at East High School. Three hundred new books were donated, and representatives from all of the participating organizations helped to staff the fair. The event included book discussion groups and more!

Used Books Find New Homes in RCSD Classrooms

Although Give Back, Give Books was focused on gathering new books, thousands of gently-used books came our way, too. A Penfield Eagle Scout candidate helped us organize a used book giveaway, during which almost 7,000 used books were picked up by RCSD teachers.

SUNY Brockport to Launch Book Drive

On February 12th, SUNY Brockport will launch its "Have a Heart, Give a Book" campaign, which aims to put a new book in the hands of 1,000 local children in the Brockport Central School District, the Brockport Child Development Center, and the Rochester City School District. We are very grateful to the university for sharing their energy with Give Back, Give Books!

Books for this campaign can be purchased at the SUNY Brockport Barnes & Noble College Bookstore, and are being collected at a many locations around campus.

Special Books, Special Visit

Wegmans Gift Lifts "Give Back, Give Books" Past Goal

A donation from Wegmans of 1,700 books has enabled Give Back, Give Books to reach its goal of 10,000 new books to donate to city school students. The gift was announced in conjunction with Rochester Mayor Robert J. Duffy's Leadership Summit on Literacy.

8,000 New Books Donated!

The drive has received about 6,000 new books and the funds to purchase at least 2,000 more new books for city school students. The drive will continue, with various organizations, including SUNY Brockport, launching drives now. Mood Makers Books, Barnes & Noble in Pittsford, and Borders in Henrietta will continue to act as a drop-off points, and books can still be purchased here on the Give Back, Give Books website.

Drive Reaches 3,000 out of 10,000 Goal

With two weeks to go in the month-long drive, about three thousand books have been donated to the Give Back, Give Books community book drive. "We are very happy with the drive so far," said Patricia Braus, executive director of REF. "But we know we need to get more people involved to meet our goal of 10,000 books."

Book Donation = Beauty and the Beast Ticket Discount

The Rochester Broadway Theatre League announced today that it will hold a book drive in support of Give Back, Give Books. If you bring two new children's books to the RBTL box office between Monday, October 9th and Sunday, October 15th, you will receive a $5 discount on a ticket for the Sunday evening performance of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Kick-Off Press Conference Launches Campaign

The Rochester Education Foundation launched the Give Back, Give Books campaign with a kick-off press conference on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at 2 p.m. The event was held at the Phillis Wheatley Community Library, a branch of the Rochester Public Library. Many public leaders were in attendance to provide their support for the campaign.

Scott Spino Foundation Donates 600 Books

The Give Back, Give Books drive was kicked off with a donation of 600 books from the Scott Spino Foundation, presented by Geri Spino, president of the foundation.

Geri Spino explained the gift of 600 books to the drive. "The Scott Spino Foundation has experienced the generosity of many volunteers which has resulted in contributions of time, donations and books to the Scott Spino Literacy Program, for our inner city children. Now the Scott Spino Foundation would like the city schools to share in this generosity, a generosity which has opened the hearts and minds of our children and our volunteers to new and magical experiences through reading. So, to share this magic with the City Schools, it is our pleasure to donate these 600 books."

Any $10 purchase of books made can be exchanged for a voucher for a hockey ticket game in November at that time. In addition, book vouchers will be distributed at participating book stores. A $10 Give Back, Give Books purchase at a participating book store will earn a $10 voucher (one per person) during the month of October for a November game as long as supplies last.
